HISTORY

Built thousands upon thousands of years ago by the malevolent Empire of Tears, the Dark Fortress was a colossal, self-aware structure housing a centralized brain on the fringes of Sector 666. Though rumored to be a sanctuary, those travelers who entered never reemerged. The fall of the Empire of Tears went unnoticed by the Fortress, which continued its silent vigil.

Within its walls, the Dark Fortress maintained its prisoners in a dreamlike stasis, suspended within transparent spheres, siphoning their life force to fuel itself and amass power for the prophesied return of the Empire of Tears. Its purpose, ingrained over countless years, was to harness this energy to aid the Empire's conquest.

In recent times, Green Lantern John Stewart petitioned the Guardians of the Universe to study the Fortress, hoping to understand its nature and liberate its trapped inhabitants. Ironically, the Fortress ensnared Stewart, delving into his memories for means of control.

Confronting the Fortress, the Green Lantern shattered its delusion, revealing the Empire of Tears' destruction. This truth ignited the Fortress's rage, causing it to violently draw upon the remaining life forces, intent on fulfilling its twisted purpose and the Empire's ambitions. It would destroy everything in its path. A fierce mental and physical battle ensued with Stewart, as the Fortress sought their mutual annihilation. Ultimately, John Stewart's resolve prevailed, and he overcame the ancient entity.

Upon regaining awareness, the Dark Fortress learned from Stewart that the stolen life forces had been replaced by a faint emerald charge. The Green Lantern then presented an alternative: to become a true sanctuary, a haven for travelers. This new sense of purpose resonated within the ancient structure, and it willingly embraced its new destiny.[1]

POWERS AND WEAPONS

The Dark Fortress is able to communicate with its captives, probing their memories to lull them into a state of tranquility. From there, it would slowly drain their life force for its own purposes. It is not known if this would lead to the captives' deaths or if the process extended their lifespans, though immobilized and unresponsive over the ages.
